The building was in ruins for years because it was bombed in Spanish Civil War and also in 1960. The building was granted to Dali by the City Council of Figueres. The half-ruined building was rebuilded by enlarging it and was opened in 1974 as a museum. Including <strong>4000 artworks<\/strong> from Dali\u2019s own collection, this is the world\u2019s largest museum dedicated to Salvador Dali. The work standing on the tires, which you will see when you reach the entrance at the front fa\u00e7ade, is devoted to 19thcentury French painter <strong>Meissonier<\/strong>. Besides, there is a work outside in commemoration of Catalan philosopher and writer <strong>Francesc Pujols<\/strong> whom Dali admired. Also, diving suit above the entrance door symbolizes the journey to human subconscious through psychoanalysis. Dali wore this original suit at a party and nearly suffocated.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Hall\"><\/span>The Hall<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A charming <strong>Ganymede<\/strong> statue with a hat made with jewels is noteworthy. Ganymede is the son of Tros who founded Troy and symbolizes homosexuality in Greek poetry. Mannequins welcoming the guests and horror element grotesque figures on the walls draw your attention. At the most upper parts, washbasins with angel-like figures encircle the yard. <strong>The letter G<\/strong> inside the flower bed symbolizes Dali&#8217;s wife <strong>Gala<\/strong>, the second important woman figure in his life after his mother.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rainy_Taxi\"><\/span>Rainy Taxi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The installation in the middle of the yard is the biggest mecanic surrealist artwork in the world. <strong>The Cadillac<\/strong> you see was given as a gift to Dali from his close friend <strong>Al Capone<\/strong>, the famous gangster from Naples. Only six cars were produced from this model. Dali broke the window of the car to attribute it to Al Capone and act of violence. The huge statue of Persian <strong>Queen Esther<\/strong> on the car is made from bronze. There is a system which starts a rain inside the car when you insert a coin from the side of the car. When it rains, the snails accompanying the driver and passengers become happy.<\/p>\n<p>The boat crowned with an umbrella belonged to Gala. This boat is placed on a column of tires with props, which have an important place in Dali\u2019s imagination. The bust on top of the column, which is made from a delicate marble, represents <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Girardon<\/strong>. Girardon is the sculptor of <strong>Versailles Palace<\/strong>. When you insert a coin from the side of the car, it rains inside the taxi and at the same time, the umbrella at the top opens and closes.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Ground_Floor\"><\/span>The Ground Floor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This section is the stage at the old theater house. Impressive geodesic dome is both Figueres\u2019 and the museum\u2019s most symbolic structure. With its gigantic dimensions, it is Dali\u2019s most sinografic work. There are phantasmagoric sceneries in the composition. Behind Gala figure; Island of the Dead, mentioned in the play, and cypress trees which symbolize the life on the island are seen.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Grave_Of_Dali\"><\/span>The Grave Of Dali<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The tomb on the ground, which stands in front of the <strong>Labyrinth<\/strong> painting, symbolizes Dali\u2019s grave. The grave is in the crypt room one floor below.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gala_Nude_Looking_At_The_Sea\"><\/span>Gala Nude Looking At The Sea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This oil painting looks like nude Gala from the back and if you look with a squinting eye or 18 meters away from the painting, it appears as <strong>Abraham Lincoln<\/strong>, the president who had abolished the slavery in United States.
