Spain is located in the Iberian Peninsula, in the south of European Continent. With 499,000 square kilometers surface area it is the second, and with 47 million population it is the fourth biggest country in EU.
Spain is a secular, democratic country and a parliamentary monarchy. Felipe VI is the head of state since 2014.
The currency of Spain is the Euro (EUR).
The first language of the country is Spanish (Castillan) while Catalan, Basque, Galician and Valencian languages are spoken in various autonomous regions.
The country consists of 17 autonomous regions and 50 provinces. Some of the most well known and important regions are; Madrid, Catalonia, Andalucia, Pais Vasco, Galicia, Castilla y Leon, Valencia, Canarias, Baleares.
Throughout the history, Spain has been invaded and inhabited by many different people and cultures. Iberians, Celts and Basques were the native people of the peninsula and around 3000 years ago Phoenicians, the Greeks, and the Carthaginians started to invade the peninsula and these invades followed by the Romans, Visigots and Muslims. All these various clans and cultures which gathered from different parts of the Mediterranean left a footprint and created a very unique and sophisticated culture of Spain.
